I like some foods, but others not so much. Similarly, I like some uses of generative AI, and others I do not like.

Professional engineers work in groups and compare their work with that of others. Through this process of reflection and discussion, they gain different perspectives, ways of thinking about a problem, and different methods for solving the problem. While this is an important part of being an engineer, students don’t always get the opportunity to practice it. In fact, when I was in school, I never had the chance to examine other people’s work as part of the curriculum. I want to give my students the opportunity to learn this skill.
In addition, I have seen students use generative AI to do their homework and get incorrect answers. Raising their awareness of the limitations of the tools while also developing a critical eye will help them use the tools effectively and make them better engineers.
