Students need to always be skeptical of the answers they get from ChatGPT and determine whether the answers are accurate and relevant to the problem they are solving. As I have heard from industry, this is an important skill to have in the workplace.

In my matrix analysis, data science, and machine learning courses within the Math department, students need to apply mathematical methods to solve real-world problems with software. Since our students don’t have a coding background, this aspect of the work is particularly challenging. They need to use Python, R, or MATLAB, but without a programming background, it can be hard to remember and use the proper syntax in the beginning.

For this reason, I encourage them to get coding and debugging help from ChatGPT (or GitHub Copilot or Llama). This allows them to focus on the mathematical concepts, methods, and the logic of the programming, which are the most important things to learn in this context.
