As a faculty, we’re in the process of figuring out an approach to generative AI that will be consistent across courses. We want to ensure equity; that’s what it’s all about. To do this, we need to develop a shared understanding of generative AI.

The goal is for all of our students to have equal opportunities to learn and use Generative AI in our program, and to understand how to use it responsibly and in a way that does not shortcut learning. The key question was, “Can we all get on the same page?” In order to do that we needed to find out where each of us was in terms of our knowledge and use of AI tools. The Faculty Engagement Sessions served as a mechanism for this important work, and led to the development of a Faculty Statement on Generative AI Use that we all played a part in authoring.

It was a collective effort, a faculty effort, as opposed to an individual effort. If we want to have a widespread and sustained impact, to integrate AI across the curriculum successfully, we need to involve everyone in the process.
