Addressing Microaggressions in Teaching and Advising Settings

Jan 18 • 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

Despite efforts to create an inclusive climate, discussions and actions often cause harm, whether intentionally or unintentionally. “Microaggressions” refer to the everyday slights, insults and invalidations that target people based on markers such as race, ethnicity, religion or neurodivergence. This session helps you anticipate negative messages commonly observed or experienced (e.g. denying someone’s being or pathologizing learning differences). You then get practice with four microintervention strategies – from calling out to disarming impact to educating perpetrators to seeking support – to help you imagine when and how to respond if you observe or experience a microaggression.

This session is only open to Northeastern University students, staff, and educators. Please use your Northeastern email when registering.
