Building an honest, respectful, and ethical writing community is still my core responsibility—discussing and defining GenAI affordances, limitations, and misusage are now activities fundamental to achieving that goal.

I am learning to provide my students with a controlled environment within which to use and evaluate GenAI tools in the writing classroom. This allows them to experiment with the technology during the writing process, and to discuss and reflect on GenAI’s affordances and limitations relative to their learning. While reflection and self-assessment have always been a fundamental component of the writing process, it is paramount in this age of GenAI. Building an honest, respectful, and ethical writing community is still my core responsibility—discussing and defining GenAI affordances, limitations, and misusage are now activities fundamental to achieving that goal.
