“I believe ethical use of AI in teaching means being honest with students about both its potential and its unresolved problems — especially the serious copyright and authorship questions surrounding how visual AI systems are trained on artists’ work.”

As someone working with visual artists, I am committed to introducing AI in ways that support student thinking, self-awareness, and creative growth — without asking students to participate in systems whose ethical foundations are still being contested in courts and policy rooms. My entry point has been the Industry Action Plan, a structured experience that uses AI as a mentor-like reflective thinking partner. Students use it to understand themselves, their work, and the work of their peers in ways that guide their creative practice. That, I believe, is where AI can do the most good right now with the least ethical compromise.
