Incorporating AI in ways that both support learning and that students themselves find acceptable can be challenging. The key is for students to use AI in their coursework only to enhance learning, rather than to simply make things faster or easier.

My use of generative AI in my teaching rests on a single question: does it help students learn? Many of the reasons we use AI in life, such as efficiency, are not good for learning. I’ve also found that students have their own strong sense of what feels appropriate. Helping students understand when AI is and is not appropriate can contribute to both educational value and student trust.
