I think of introducing students to generative AI as a handshake: a brief, low-stakes first encounter that opens the door without overwhelming anyone. I’m not expecting expert-level results or miracles from a single session. What matters to me is that students begin to understand how the way they frame a question shapes the answer they get, and that they develop some critical awareness about what AI can and can’t do well for legal research. I’d rather motivate students through curiosity and relevance than through grades, and letting them explore their own research topics and learn from each other’s strategies feels more productive than assigning points. My approach is to start small, keep it grounded in the discipline, and build from there.
