Introduction

As a graduate student actively applying for software engineering roles, resume refinement and interview preparation have become regular parts of my job-seeking process. I’ve found using AI tools incredibly helpful—not only for reviewing and tailoring my resume but also for preparing for interviews. I’ve used AI as a mock interviewer to practice behavioral questions using the STAR format and technical questions based on my resume. For example, before an interview with Amazon, I used ChatGPT to simulate a STAR-based behavioral mock interview for Amazon’s leadership principles. I responded using the voice message feature, and ChatGPT followed up with additional questions just like a real interviewer would. This has made me feel more confident before important interviews.

Specific Examples

  • Tailoring my resume to match a job description by comparing the required skills with the ones present in my resume.
  • Using AI to generate possible technical questions based on the skills and technologies listed in my resume (e.g., programming languages, frameworks, tools, or methodologies).

Tools and Resources

  • Claude: Good for in-depth resume rewrites and comparisons.
  • ChatGPT: Best for resume reviews, tailoring, and behavioral question prep.

Before you start, be ready to provide:

  • Your resume (in any editable format)
  • The job description you’re applying to
  • A list of technical and behavioral topics you’d like to focus on

Example Prompt 1 – Specific to Resume Tailoring

“I’m a [level_of_study] student applying for a [type_of_position] role. Here’s the job description. Can you extract the key skills and compare them with the ones in my resume? Tell me what’s missing, suggest edits to make my resume more impactful, and ensure it aligns better with this role.”

Follow-up Prompts:

  • “Based on the revised resume, are there any metrics or impact phrases I should add to improve it further?”
  • “Can you propose 2 alternate versions of this bullet point that better reflect leadership or problem-solving?”

Example Prompt 2 – Behavioral Interview Practice (STAR Method)

“I’m a [level_of_study] student preparing for a behavioral interview for [company_name]. Can you act as a mock interviewer and ask me relevant

STAR-based behavioral questions? I’ll respond via voice message or chat—please ask realistic follow-up questions based on my answers.”

Follow-up Prompts:

  • “What STAR format improvements can I make to this response?”
  • “Can you help me polish my response for clarity, stronger impact, or better alignment with [company_name] principles?”

Thoughts and Concerns to Keep in Mind

  • Give specific context. Mention the type of role you’re applying for and your experience level. This helps AI generate more relevant responses.
  • Don’t over-trust generated suggestions. AI may add tools or experience that don’t actually apply to you—always double-check.
  • Double-check factual edits. AI may invent tools or metrics that don’t apply to your experience—review all content carefully.
  • Preserve your voice. Use AI for structure and idea generation, but make sure your resume and interview responses still sound like you.
