Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Our work is firmly grounded in the learning sciences.
The Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research is deeply committed to the practice of evidence-based teaching. In addition to drawing upon the findings of scholarship done by others, we provide support for faculty who are interested in pursuing their own, original, scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
The SoTL process creates a space for us, as educators, to become as deeply invigorated by teaching and learning challenges as we are by our disciplinary research. When faculty participate in SoTL they also join a community of educators who are dedicated to the understanding and improvement of their practice through systematic inquiry.
At Northeastern, CATLR’s Teaching and Learning Scholars Program provides a structured experience in which faculty investigate their students’ learning through SoTL. Scholars report that by participating in the program, which brings together educators from across the university, they gain a sense of community and perspective on the university that is both beneficial to their practice and socially rewarding.
